1854: Ashmun Institute (later Lincoln University), the world's first institute founded "to provide a higher education in the arts and sciences for youth of African descent", opens in Oxford, PA.

1992: Los Angeles police officers are acquitted of charges stemming from the beating of Rodney King; riots ensue.
